IXYS Thyristor Overview

BeiLuo supplies genuine IXYS thyristor (SCR) modules, the phase-control and rectifier building blocks for high-power AC and DC applications. The MCMA family offers phase-leg thyristor modules from about 140 A to several hundred amps at 1600 V and beyond, in the industry-standard TO-240AA and larger isolated packages, with low on-state voltage, high surge current capability and defined dv/dt and di/dt ratings. A thyristor latches on when it is gated and conducts until the current falls below its holding value, which makes it ideal for phase-angle control of AC power, soft-start of motors and transformers, static switches, DC drives and high-power rectifiers. Unlike a transistor, a thyristor handles very high surge currents gracefully, which is essential in equipment that sees inrush and fault currents. IXYS thyristor modules come in single, phase-leg and thyristor/diode configurations, so a designer can build a full converter bridge from a small number of parts. Every module BeiLuo ships is factory-traceable and includes an import declaration, a certificate of origin and a RoHS compliance file. Our FAE team helps you match the current, voltage and configuration to your application, then confirm the gate-drive, snubber and thermal design. Selecting a thyristor module means matching the average on-state current and voltage to your load, choosing the configuration for your bridge, and verifying the surge and cooling requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read the IXYS thyristor table?

Match ITAV to the average on-state current your load draws, use VDRM for the reverse voltage with margin, and read Configuration to see whether the module is a phase leg or a single thyristor.

Package and Type then decide the mechanical and design fit.

How does a thyristor differ from a transistor?

A thyristor latches on when gated and conducts until the current falls below its holding value, so it is used for phase control and rectification rather than for fast switching. It handles very high surge currents, which suits inrush and fault conditions.

Use a transistor or IGBT when you need to turn the device off on command.

How do I control a thyristor?

A thyristor is gated by a current pulse into the gate, timed to the AC line for phase-angle control. The gate drive, the snubber and the dv/dt and di/dt ratings must all be respected for reliable commutation.

Our FAE team can review your gate and snubber design.

How do I plan the thermal design?

Begin from RthJC in the datasheet, add interface and heatsink resistance, and verify the junction temperature at the average on-state current plus surge duty. The isolated module mounts on a common heatsink.
